Interview With Shelby Kent-Stewart

There are some authors out there who are selfless and so extremely supportive. Shelby Kent-Stewart is one of them. She is also an advocate for those who are suffering and innocent - whether it be survivors of abuse to animals in need of care. Shelby stands up for those who can't stand for themselves and she gives them a voice.

She also defends her friends, fiercely. Believe me, you don't want to mess with anyone she loves and cares for.

Those are just a few of the reasons so many of us in the world of authors (and readers) love and admire Shelby. Even if she does not realize her value to us, she holds a special place in our hearts.

I asked Shelby if she would be willing to "sit" down with me and answer some questions - give us a little idea of the workings of her mind and let us delve into who Shelby is. She obliged, much to my joy. Check out the interview below.

Thank you so much, Shelby, for your willingness to “sit” down to answer some questions for me. I truly do appreciate how limited your time is, so you taking a few precious moments to respond to my queries means the world to me.

You’re too kind, Ashlee. If we can’t make time to ‘sit down’ with a friend and chat, then what are we working for? Thank you, by the way, for thinking of me for your fabulous blog.

Question 1.) I have first-hand experience at how wonderful your stories are – the journey you take your reader on (I am a huge fan). I want to know (and I am sure I am not the only one): How did you get started in the writing and publishing world? What was it that motivated or inspired you to write your first piece?

What a lovely compliment, thank you! As always, you’re one of the most supportive and generous writers I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.
As far back as I can remember, I’ve been writing something, short stories, advertising copy, screenplays, political speeches, the list goes on and on. I was fortunate to have a few things published in grade school and high school, but things kicked up a notch in college when a major publication picked up a piece I wrote.
As to my current passion for contemporary adult fiction, I’d like to say there was some grand design behind it, but here’s where truth is stranger than fiction. It was a fluke. On a whim, I wrote a romantic puff-piece for an Erotic Romance site and a publisher contacted me. Unfortunately, the relationship was not a good one, but that’s behind me now and I’m looking forward to the future.

Questions 2.) If you could be or do anything, without limits, who/what would you be/do?

Great question and an easy one to answer. In the not too distant future, I hope to acquire enough land to have an animal sanctuary. At one time, my family owned some acreage on the Central Coast of California. Stray dogs and cats, deer, wild turkeys, goats and even a donkey or two were my constant companions. I’m a fierce advocate for animals and could never repay the joy they’ve given me, but a sanctuary would be a start.

Question 3.) When it comes to your books, what is the motivation behind the stories? Is there any “real life” in any of the stories (that you would be willing to admit to)?

Another great question. My motivation is simple, to tell a story I’d like to read and to which readers can relate. I don’t follow trends and I don’t write to titillate but, like life, sex happens. When it fits and is organic to the story, it goes into the scene. When it doesn’t, I move on.
Has ‘real life’ ever invaded one of my books? Yes, twice. I believe I’ve mentioned that I shared Hadley’s reticence of marriage in Runaway Brat, but what I’ve never admitted until now is the sexual assault which led me to write Surviving Sydney. While the circumstances are different, the trauma and impact on subsequent relationships is very much the same. Thankfully, I had some amazing help and I’m past it, for which I’m forever grateful.

Question 4.) What is one dream you have for your stories? And what are your plans –goals - going into the future?

My dream is to continue to write stories that strike a chord and perhaps make people think. My goals over the next few years include two new series, several standalone books and keeping coffee growers busy.

Questions 5.) When you are not writing, promoting your friends, or working your “real life” job, what could your fans and readers find you doing?

Dancing, hiking, yoga. When time permits, and I wish had more of it, I work with vets with PTSD in getting their stories on paper.

Question 6.) Besides Twitter, where can your fans and followers find you on social media? What are your “follow me” links?

  1. Amazing blog. Thank you for sharing this with the fans. I am a HUGE fan of Shelby and a dear friend. Surviving Sydney was my first erotic read of hers and after reading her book I had to email her. I felt the book was meant for me. I could relate to the book on so many levels. From then Shelby and I became friends and sisters. I would walk the ends of the earth for Shelby and it's true, Shelby will do anything for those she loves and cares for. Thank you once again for sharing this with us.

  3. Great interview, Ashlee, and, Shelby, wow! It's so great to learn more about you. I had no idea about your goal of opening an animal refuge or that you grew up with so many animals in your life. Just gives me that much more reason to admire and adore you. 💚
